The world court in the Tomsk region sentenced a local schoolgirl to five months of restriction of freedom for desecrating the flag of Russia. According to RIA Novosti with reference to a representative of the Tomsk Regional Court, the girl set fire to the flag in the company of classmates.

“The magistrate … passed a sentence on a minor resident of the Tomsk region, who was found guilty of committing a crime under article 329 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (desecration of the state emblem or flag of the Russian Federation),” the agency’s interlocutor said.

The court found that in May 2022, a girl with a flag came to a group of classmates and set it on fire. At the court session, the schoolgirl explained that she had no malicious intent to set fire to the flag, and the act was committed out of a desire to attract the attention of her classmates.

“Holding the flag, the convict set it on fire with a lighter, and then posted photos of the above actions on a social network. The court imposed a punishment in the form of restriction of freedom for a period of five months with the establishment of obligations and restrictions provided for in Article 53 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (restriction of freedom),” the court said.

The verdict has not yet entered into force and can be appealed.
