The California District Attorney’s Office dropped charges of domestic violence against Justin Roiland, the screenwriter of the animated series Rick and Morty, who also voiced its main characters Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. It is reported by TASS with reference to the Deadline portal.

“Today we dropped the charges due to lack of sufficient evidence,” spokesman for District Attorney Todd Spitzer told the publication.

The screenwriter stated that now that the case is closed, he intends to move on, “focus on my creative projects” and “reclaim my good name”. Whether Roiland will seek reinstatement at work, he did not say.

On January 12, NBC reported that Roiland is being charged in connection with the January 2020 incidents with inflicting bodily harm on an unnamed girl, as well as unlawfully restricting her freedom, which was accompanied by threats, violence and misrepresentation. After that, the network Adult Swim ceased cooperation with him, stating that Roiland “will always be considered one of the authors” of the project, but Dan Harmon will remain its sole executive producer, and another actor will voice the main characters.
