The Russian authorities are “deliberately spreading misinformation” about the UK’s promised supply of depleted uranium projectiles to Ukraine. According to RBC with reference to Sky News, this was stated by a representative of the British Ministry of Defense.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the day before that if London really hands over such shells to Kyiv, Moscow will be forced to respond. “If all this happens, then Russia will be forced to react accordingly, I mean that the collective West is already starting to use weapons with a nuclear component,” he said.

The British Ministry of Defense replied that the country’s army has been using depleted uranium in its shells for “decades”. “This is a standard component, it has nothing to do with nuclear weapons or capabilities. Russia is aware of this, but is deliberately trying to misinform,” the agency said in a statement.

According to a ministry spokesperson, scientific research confirms that any impact on human health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is “likely to be low.” The ministry added that the shells are highly effective against modern tanks and armored vehicles.
