Badgers burrowed under railroad tracks in the Netherlands, causing long-term cancellations on two lines. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the Associated Press.

All trains were halted Tuesday afternoon on a busy line between the southern towns of Den Bosch and Boxtel after animals dug into a dam carrying the rails. The National Railroad Company said the line would be shut down for at least a week.

Because of the activity of the badgers, “the rails can sink and then the safety of train traffic cannot be guaranteed,” ProRail, which maintains the Dutch rail network, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, badgers also burrowed under rails near the northern village of Molkverum in the Dutch province of Friesland, putting the line out of action until next month while workers sought permission to move the animals.

Badgers are protected animals in the Netherlands, so rail operators must obtain permission to move them or disturb their habitat before repairs can begin.
