China’s proposals to resolve the conflict in Ukraine may in the future be taken as a basis for developing a plan for a peaceful settlement. True, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed, when Kyiv and the West are ready for this.
Recall that earlier the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement with Beijing’s position on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. The document contains 12 points. Among them is the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and to resume direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian authorities positively assessed the fact that China was developing a peace plan for Ukraine.
In turn, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called China’s proposals “not a plan of action, but Beijing’s reflections on this topic.” His adviser Mikhail Podolyak explained that the plan sets out “very general principles” and is not a well-thought-out “logistic proposal.” In his opinion, there is no balanced logic in the document.
The EU also said that they do not consider China’s proposals on Ukraine to be a peace plan. This is rather a positional document, said Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy.
US President Joe Biden said that China’s peace plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine can only be beneficial for Russia.
At the same time, according to John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, the US authorities expected that Chinese President Xi Jinping, in negotiations with the Russian leader, would advocate the withdrawal of the Russian Armed Forces from Ukraine. True, Washington is concerned that the leader of the PRC can only call on Russia to stop hostilities in Ukraine. And this, according to him, does not provide for the withdrawal of its troops from the territory of the country.
