The White House said that they consider the “growing closeness” between China and Russia nothing more than a “marriage of convenience.” This statement was made by White House spokesman John Kirby.

The countries may have bilateral relations, he said, but the US does not view these talks and the growing proximity of Beijing and Moscow as anything more than “a marriage of convenience.”

Kirby believes that Chinese leader Xi Jinping needs Russian President Vladimir Putin to “crowd US leadership around the world,” and Moscow needs Beijing for “help” with weapons.

Recall that Xi Jinping, at the invitation of Vladimir Putin, is on a state visit to Moscow on March 20-22. This is his first trip abroad since being re-elected as President of the People’s Republic of China for a third term.

Earlier today, in the Alexander Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace, negotiations between Putin and Jinping began in an expanded format.
Prior to this, the parties held closed discussions in a narrow format.

According to Putin, a meaningful and frank exchange of views was held at the narrow-format talks with the Chinese leader.
