The Swedish authorities have taken some “positive steps” to approve Stockholm’s application for NATO membership, but at the moment they are not enough, said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
According to TRT Haber, the diplomat recalled that last November the Swedish Parliament approved amendments to the Constitution, which tighten anti-terrorist legislation. Due to the amendments in the country, it will be easier to initiate cases against persons associated with Kurdish organizations that Ankara considers terrorist, primarily representatives of the PKK, Euronews notes. However, according to the minister, Sweden should take other measures – in particular, to introduce a ban on the financing of terrorism, the recruitment of people into such organizations and their propaganda.
Cavusoglu added that Turkey’s consent to Sweden’s membership in NATO depends on steps taken by Stockholm before the NATO summit to be held July 11-12 in Vilnius, Anadolu reports.
