Among the new special forces units in Belarus will be the Berkut detachment. As RBC reports with reference to Belarus Segodnya, this was announced by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the country Nikolai Karpenkov.
“Its staffing is coming to an end, servicemen are coming here for contract service, completing their military service in the special forces brigade this spring,” the deputy minister said.
The task of “Berkut” will be the fight against sabotage and reconnaissance groups and illegal armed formations. Other similar units will do the same – for example, “Lynx”, “Smerch” and “Honor”.
Karpenkov said that internal troops would use drones to counter the saboteurs. “With the help of drones, it is possible to inspect the entire territory without endangering the lives of our specially trained military personnel.” he noted.
Previously, the special forces “Berkut” existed in Ukraine. It was created in 1992, in 2014 it was disbanded after the Euromaidan. During the protests against ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, the authorities used the Berkut to use force against the opposition. It was this unit that dispersed the Maidan at the end of 2013, and then participated in the attempts to storm the permanent protest camp in the center of Kyiv. The order to disband the special forces was signed by the then acting head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov.
