MiG-29 fighters, which are in service with the Slovak army, will be sent to Ukraine. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the Slovak edition of Novi Chas.
“There is a consensus in the government. Slovakia will send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine,” Prime Minister Eduard Heger said following a cabinet meeting.
At the same time, he noted that, despite the consent of the government, the transfer of fighters will have to take place within the framework of an international coalition, and negotiations on this topic are still ongoing.
Earlier it was reported that members of the commission on defense and security of the National Council (parliament) of Slovakia discussed at a special meeting this week the possibility of transferring MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine.
It was noted that in total Slovakia can send 13 such aircraft to Ukraine.
The Polish press reported earlier this week that Slovakia had received a good offer of compensation for the supply of its MiGs to Ukraine.
“Slovakia could transfer 13 such aircraft to Ukraine. Their cost, together with spare parts, is estimated at $400 million. In return, the country is offered compensation in the amount of $900 million, including military equipment, ”wrote the Polish media.
According to Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nagy, part of the compensation may come from the European Peace Fund. In addition, he noted, Slovakia could receive “the most modern military equipment from the United States, which the country’s army lacks.”
