The expansion of Russia’s military presence in Syria is a “good idea,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, “if Russia has a desire to expand the bases or increase their number, then this is a matter of a technical or logistical nature.” In addition, Assad also advocated equipping Russian military bases with modern weapons to ensure “effective deterrence of threats.”
At the same time, the military aspect of the Russian bases was not discussed at the talks with President Vladimir Putin that took place the day before, Assad specified, but the parties touched on the issue of military cooperation.
Assad is in Moscow on an official visit. On the eve of his talks with President Putin, they lasted three hours. At the same time, talks were also held in Moscow between Russian and Syrian Defense Ministers Sergei Shoigu and Ali Mahmoud Abbas, as well as Foreign Ministers of the two countries Sergei Lavrov and Faisal Mikdad. During the visit, Assad supported the Russian military operation in Ukraine and said that Syria would recognize the new borders of Russia.
