Finnish President Sauli Niinistö expects his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to announce at a meeting with him in Ankara on Friday that Finland’s application for NATO membership has been approved. According to TASS, Niinistö wrote about this on the social network.
“It became known that at the stage when Turkish President Erdogan decided to ratify Finland’s membership in NATO, he wanted to meet and fulfill this promise directly at the level of presidents. The Turkish side hoped that I would be there to confirm their intentions when they announced this decision. Of course, I accepted the invitation and will go to accept his will,” Niinistö wrote.
Earlier Wednesday, the Turkish leader told reporters that Turkey may soon approve Finland’s application to join NATO. “The President of Finland will arrive on Friday, we will meet with him and do what we promised to do. I hope that will be the case, ”he said, answering the question of whether a bill regarding Helsinki’s application to join NATO will come to parliament in a week for discussion and whether it will be approved.
Finland and Sweden applied for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance in May 2022, but Turkey blocked the accession process, demanding that they declare Kurdish organizations terrorist, as well as extradite persons accused of terrorism or participation in a coup attempt in 2016.
