The daily commute from home to work and back helps employees de-stress and switch between work and home duties. This opinion was expressed by experts in the field of human resource management Professor Matthew Pishchek and Christy McAlpine, writes the Discover edition.
According to them, the usual route to the office creates a transitional space in which a person is free from work tasks and household chores. The absence of such a reset blurs the boundaries between social roles, and people do not have time to step back from work. This is one of the reasons why remote workers are often prone to stress and burnout.
Piszczek and McAlpine advise employees working from home to take 15-minute walks before and after the work day. Those who continue to travel to work have been told to think less about professional tasks while on the road and instead listen to music, podcasts, or chat with friends.
They added that the positive impact of commuting is experienced by both public transport passengers and car drivers. However, on days when something happened on the way to work or back, and the level of stress was higher than usual, employees said that they were not able to relax and distract themselves from work tasks.
