Serbia is paying a huge price for not implementing sanctions against Russia and should join international restrictions as it becomes “unbearable” and President Aleksandar Vucic is under intense pressure, Serbian Economy Minister Rade Basta said on social media.
At the same time, he noted that he “supports President Vučić in protecting state and national interests and is absolutely confident in him,” therefore, “asks the Serbian government and all ministers to speak out on this issue.” The minister explained that initially Serbia expected that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict would be resolved and “reason would prevail”, but “over time, we had to face a new reality.” Basta stressed that the economy “is of key importance for Serbia”, so the country needs to maintain economic growth and fight for Serbs to live well, RBC reports.
At the same time, the United Serbia party, which includes Basta, distanced itself from his statements, and the socialist movement, which is headed by the director of the Serbian intelligence agency for security and information, Aleksandar Vulin, demanded the resignation of the minister, saying that Basta “pursues the goal of dividing the Serbian government.”
