The Moldovan police uncovered a network of agents whose activities were aimed at destabilizing the country. According to RBC with reference to Spiegel, this was stated by the head of the General Commissariat of Police, Viorel Cernautanu.
According to a police spokesman, the network is controlled by the Russian side, its members arrived from Russia in Moldova “with a very specific purpose.” Cernautanu stated that they intended to “weaken the local pro-Western government”.
After the raids on Saturday evening, March 12, the police interrogated 25 people, seven of them were detained. The operation took place ahead of a Sunday protest in Chisinau, where protesters protested against rising prices and tariffs. The demonstrators, led by deputies from the opposition Shor party, called on the authorities to pay winter heating and electricity bills and demanded the resignation of President Maia Sandu and the government. The police said that persons “trained by a specialized service in Russia” were guilty of organizing the riots.
According to Cernautanu, an undercover Moldovan police officer infiltrated a group whose members were promised up to $10,000 for destabilizing the situation in Moldova during the protests. In total, according to a police spokesman, ten groups of five to ten people were organized, all of whom received special training.
