Russian airlines need to change the location of aircraft identification marks. According to RBC, this follows from the order of the Ministry of Transport, published on the official Internet portal of legal information on February 28. By this order, the head of the department, Vitaly Savelyev, approved a new procedure for applying state, registration and accounting identification marks of civil aircraft.

According to the document, from September 1, 2023, the state and registration identification marks should now only be located together – on the left half of the lower surface of the wing. The previous order of 2014 called for the application of the state mark on the right half of the lower surface of the wing. The state sign is depicted as two letters RA. The registration plate of aircraft of Russian airlines consists of five digits, between them there must be a hyphen. According to aviation expert Grigory Pomerantsev, thanks to the new order, the Ministry of Transport, apparently, wants to bring the marking of aircraft of Russian carriers in line with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to them, the state and registration numbers must be applied on the lower left part of the aircraft wing. But, for example, the US aviation authorities do not follow this ICAO recommendation, Pomerantsev notes.

According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the six largest Russian airlines (Aeroflot, S7, Pobeda, Ural Airlines, Rossiya and Utair) operated more than 550 aircraft in total at the beginning of March 2023. Now, according to the order, all of them will have to change the location of the identification marks.
