More than 100 suspects have been detained in Iran in connection with the poisoning of schoolgirls. According to RBC with reference to IRNA, this was reported in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic.
The agency said in a statement that the detainees included people “with nefarious motives” who sought to “terrify the population and students, close schools and create skepticism towards Iran.” The Ministry of Internal Affairs is investigating whether they are connected with terrorist organizations.
The country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for serious attention to the problem of student poisoning. He stressed that what happened is an unforgivable crime, and those responsible must be severely punished.
The first cases of poisoning of schoolgirls were revealed in Iran in November last year. The girls complained of nausea, fatigue, dizziness and palpitations. Several hundred students were injured. The authorities believe that the schoolgirls were poisoned with some kind of toxic substance. “Tehran’s enemies” are blamed for the attack.
Schoolgirls took part in anti-government protests that began in September after the death of a Kurdish girl, Mahsa Amini, in a police station. Amini, 22, died after being arrested by the vice police for wearing the wrong hijab.
