An international team of researchers has found that extra pounds have stolen millions of years of life from people. And that’s just for one year.
According to Dr. Peter, doctors have been talking about a real obesity pandemic for years. According to WHO experts, about 13% of adults in the world suffer from obesity. This pandemic does not cause media buzz, it does not cause a lockdown, but it is still very dangerous. Excess weight harms the economy and reduces productivity. Finally, obesity really kills: it has long been proven that extra pounds increase the risk of heart and vascular disease, harm joints, and can even cause cancer.
An international team of researchers from Singapore, China and the United States decided to find out how many unlived years people have lost due to metabolic problems. To do this, scientists analyzed data from 9,000 studies published between 2000 and 2019. Experts collected information in 162 countries. The data used reflected the causes of premature deaths from 370 injuries and diseases.
The authors of the work, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, paid special attention to metabolic ailments – obesity; hypertension; type 2 diabetes mellitus; elevated cholesterol levels; non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Experts noted a particularly strong increase in diseases in countries with high income, education and birth rates. At the same time, mortality from high cholesterol, for example, has decreased over the years, but diabetes and obesity have remained the same serious problem. Scientists have found that in 2019 alone, humanity lost 160 million years due to diseases associated with excess weight.
