The main ingredient in soy milk can lower cholesterol levels by as much as 70%. This is reported by the portal MedikForum.

According to nutritionist Igor Strokov, just 25 grams of soy protein per day can help reduce bad cholesterol by a significant amount. “Containing antioxidants, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium and iron, the main ingredient in this milk, soybeans, is ideal for a heart-healthy diet,” the expert explained.

The level of saturated fat and protein in this product is low. What’s more, studies show that certain proteins found in soy can block the production of an enzyme in the liver involved in the synthesis of bad LDL cholesterol.

Scientists examined two soy proteins thought to be involved and found that one, called B-conglycinin, is particularly important. Their study shows that digested soy peptides can lower cholesterol at levels comparable to statins.

Scientists have found that consumption of soy flour, rich in the protein B-conglycinin, reduces high cholesterol and other lipids by 70%. Its properties were even stronger than those of simvastatin, a popular drug used to treat high levels of “bad” cholesterol and blood fats.
