Protests continued in Georgia over the draft law on foreign agents approved by parliament the day before in the first reading. Today, a women’s march is taking place in the capital, the participants of the action are moving along Shota Rustaveli Avenue from the First Republic Square to the parliament building.
Approximately 5,000 people are taking part in the protests, according to Paper Kartuli.
In turn, Sputnik Georgia informs that the march is taking place in ten more Georgian cities.
Meanwhile, writes Ambegi.ge, the parliament is preparing for a rally to be held at 19:00 local time (18:00 Moscow time).
It should be reminded that the day before the Georgian deputies adopted in the first reading the draft law “On transparency of foreign influence”. The first variant of the relevant project assumes that non-profit legal entities and the media will receive the status of agents of foreign influence if more than 20% of their income comes from abroad. In addition, organizations must undergo mandatory registration.
According to the opposition, such a law will restrict the activities of independent NGOs and the media.
The country’s president, Salome Zurabishvili, has promised to veto the law if the initiative is approved by parliament.
