Freedom and democracy were one of the reasons that political movements in America used the most to sow ideologies and justify battles. Everything always sounds good. The reality is different.

In fact, because of this contradiction between results and political struggles – referring to Latin America – the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) confirms that the region is in “a trap of high inequality and low growth that functions like a vicious circle”. On the one hand, the evident concentration of power maintained by the regimes, the political violence that since the 21st century is mixed with that of organized crime, the social protection systems that do not work and the perception of constant social unrest that inevitably generates demonstrations. … and calls on the population to choose a paternalistic policy.

The UN accuses the Nicaraguan government of “crimes against humanity” and calls for international sanctions

In Nicaragua, for example, since 2018 and according to the Group of Human Rights Experts, rights have been systematically violated, journalists, priests, writers and all people who think differently have been persecuted. Daniel Ortega’s regime does not stop at silencing the opposition, and if it does it requires physical and sexual torture, nail pulling, genital electric charges and forced disappearances to be carried out or ordered, it does so without a problem. “The panel concluded that President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo committed these crimes and continue to do so as of the date of this report.”

This is not a question of left or right (…) but a question of demanding and choosing the minimum of ethics…

And the dream of equality for all?

If we took the responsibility of citizens to smell the warnings behind every small or big political behavior, we might not get to a reality like the one in Nicaragua. In politicians, we should notice their desire to stay in power forever, their subjugation through the power of state offices, and their tireless desire to silence those who can reveal the origin of certain riches.

Basically, they approach the less favored, remove their wounds and frustrations for an unattainable dignified life, make impossible promises, do it in an emotional way, dancing or crying, or tearing their clothes, surround them with magical speech that generally begins with “We”, how come the Nicaraguan and great writer Sergio Ramírez masterfully describes: “We, the compañeros, the we that eliminates any possibility of hesitation, doubt or complaint, because that self is extended to all of us: people, anonymous compañeros, the crowd that gathers in the square, the masses, the heroes and martyrs watching from their graves. The historic feat of the revolution”.

This is not about the left or the right, regardless of those who do not know how to dance with their left hand and slide their dignity in the mud, this is about the demand and choice of minimum ethics in important decisions. It is a matter of men and women who believe that everything ordinary in everyday life can be extraordinary if we adapt to democratic institutions. It is about choosing between good and evil. (OR)
