Feminatives and professions, or what is it all about?
and occupations are related to the functions and occupations that women perform in the labor market. But what are they anyway? Feminatives is derived from Latin name of feminine nouns. Feminatives and professions. How to address women?
A lot really depends on the woman, but it’s cultural to assume that she wants her gender included. After all, he is part of society and has the right to exist in it according to his own beliefs. In general, however, feminatives and professions are a difficult subject. How to address women and correctly name the position has always been a problem, although it is worth using the phrase e.g. psychologist than psychologist, doctor than doctor, dentist than dentist, user than user, etc. If for some reason a woman prefers a male form or, for example, The psychologist’s term will definitely tell you about it. There is no logical justification for not using it on a daily basis.
What are feminatives and professions? Does the dictionary include it?
Unfortunately, not everyone. It is quite common for the use of a feminine occupation name to be corrected by autocorrect. Is it good? No, because there are feminatives and occupations expressed in the feminine article. A dictionary that does not take this into account needs to be changed. Anyway, in 2015, the “Dictionary of female names of the Polish language” was published, in which feminatives appearing in Polish as early as the 19th century were indicated. Moreover, in 2012, she spoke positively about female forms of professions or positions. It was explained that the fact that they are not commonly used results from the fact that they are not well associated in society and the society simply has to convince itself of it. However, the use of such forms is perfectly correct, and their dissemination is a good practice. This position was confirmed in 2019. It was pointed out that the avoidance of feminine forms is unfounded, and the use of the chosen form should be left to people who speak and make a specific choice. So if someone wants to be called a reporter and not a reporter or a professor and not a professor, they have the right to do so. Feminatives are nothing new – only for unknown reasons their use in society has not taken root.
