Sentences were handed down in Minsk in the case of members of the Coordinating Council of the Belarusian opposition. According to Interfax with reference to the state agency BelTA, in particular, the ex-presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison.
“The Minsk City Court sentenced Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to 15 years in prison. Tikhanovskaya, by court decision, must serve her sentence in a general regime colony, ”the message says.
Tikhanovskaya participated in the 2020 presidential election in Belarus after the CEC refused to register the initiative group of her husband Sergei Tikhanovsky, who was subsequently detained and arrested. According to the officially announced election results, Tikhanovskaya won a little more than 10% of the vote, taking second place, the opposition did not recognize the election results.
In Europe, Tikhanovskaya is recognized as the leader of the Belarusian opposition.
Ex-Minister of Culture Pavel Latushko, who at the end of February announced his withdrawal from the coordinating council of the Belarusian opposition, was sentenced in absentia to 18 years in prison.
The prosecutor’s office demanded 19 years in prison for both.
