The discord between Poland and Germany deepened amid the conflict in Ukraine, including over the issue of arms supplies to Kyiv, writes Bloomberg.
According to the agency, the disagreements between Warsaw and Berlin “reached a new level” because of missiles, tanks and spare parts for military equipment sent to Ukraine. As Bloomberg notes, the next stumbling block was the issue of sending tanks to Ukraine.
After German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed to transfer tanks to Ukraine, Warsaw began to accuse the German leadership of refusing to send spare parts for old models of these tanks, which Ukraine also needs. “For a very long time we called on the German side to join the tank coalition and supply not only tanks, but also spare parts,” said Polish President Andrzej Duda.
In turn, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Germany does not have spare parts for the old version of the Leopard. In particular, he acknowledged that the West was unable to muster two battalions of tanks for Ukraine. As the minister noted in an interview with Bloomberg, German officials are collecting “all the ammunition around the world” for tanks of older models, while working to increase production capacity. However, according to him, this also takes time, “so you need to cope with the resources that are.”
