The Vilnius City Council will consider renaming the Alexander Pushkin Literary Museum in the capital of Lithuania into the Markuchiai Estate Museum, RBC reports citing Lithuanian media.
The purpose of the renaming is to return the museum to its historical name, which “corresponds to the activities the museum currently carries out,” the council said in a statement. It is also noted that the proposed name of the estate was agreed with representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the State Commission for the Lithuanian Language and the Faculty of History of Vilnius University.
The Pushkin Museum was opened in Vilnius in 1948. It was created according to the will of Varvara Pushkina, wife of Grigory Pushkin (son of Alexander Pushkin). “From the will of V. Pushkina, the last owner of the estate, it follows that the owners <…> they called it the Markuchiai estate, ”the explanatory note emphasizes.
On March 1, the Alexander Pushkin Museum was renamed in Kyiv. Now it will bear the name Manor on Kudryavka.
