US President Joe Biden, during a recent visit to Poland, “put pressure on the leaders of the Baltic countries” because of their frequent calls to “achieve defeat” for Russia in the conflict with Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal writes, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
At the same time, the newspaper does not specify what exactly the pressure was.
The publication also notes that last week Biden suggested that the conflict could be resolved through diplomacy. Some Western officials believe that it will be possible to return to it after Ukraine achieves success on the battlefield during the counteroffensive. At the same time, according to the publication, Kyiv’s Eastern European allies fear that “the West will try to persuade [президента Украины Владимира] Zelensky” to negotiations with Moscow.
The day before, Biden met in Washington with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Both leaders discussed, among other things, the situation in Ukraine and reiterated their intention to help Kyiv for as long as it takes.
