Italian police have detained the sister of Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who was a fugitive for 30 years and was taken into custody in January. According to Interfax with reference to The Guardian, the arrest took place on Friday.
Rosalia Messina Denaro kept Mafia funds and was involved in relaying her brother’s instructions to other members of the criminal organization, thus keeping him in touch with subordinates when he went into hiding. Some of the notes were found during a search of his sister’s house.
After his arrest, 60-year-old Matteo Messina Denaro was sent to the specially guarded prison of L “Aquila in central Italy. He began to undergo chemotherapy.
He had previously been sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in the 1992 murder of anti-mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
In addition, according to Western media, he is involved in the kidnapping of 12-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo in 1993 and his murder in 1996. The boy was the son of Santino Di Matteo, a former mafia member who decided to cooperate with the authorities.
According to Judge Alfredo Montalto, the leader of Cosa Nostra completely trusted his sister and controlled the mafia family through her.
According to La Repubblica, Matteo Messina Denaro was the last leader of the Cosa Nostra of the first magnitude who was still at large.
