When she played Barbara Niechcic in the film “Nights and Days”, a great career was predicted for her. Jadwiga Barańska had the makings of a great star. She was young, beautiful and extraordinarily talented. Despite the success she achieved on the screen, she decided to give up her career and move into the shadows.

Viewers loved her in the role of Barbara Niechcic in the cult film “Nights and Days”. In the mid-1970s, Jadwiga Barańska was considered the Polish hope. However, as her career began to gain momentum, she unexpectedly began to turn down career offers and soon after moved into the background.

Jadwiga Barańska was born on October 21, 1935 in Łódź. From an early age, she dreamed of becoming an actress and performing in the theater. After graduating from school, in 1957, she appeared before the committee of the Łódź Film School, but was turned away. The culprit of her failure was the director, Jerzy Antczak, who became her husband many years later. “I thought she was ugly and skinny and incapable, so I flunked her. I was so stupid. Fortunately, I didn’t discourage her for good – filmmaker. A year later, Barańska again appeared on the exams and this time she managed to get her dream index. As an actress, she made her debut on the stage of the Classical Theatre, where she was hired after her first year of studies.

Soon after, it turned out that sparks sparked between the aspiring student and the lecturer, Jerzy Antczak. The couple quickly got married, but the beginnings of their marriage were difficult. “After Jadzia and I were married, we barely made ends meet. We were hungry back then. Her mother sold jewelry to help us,” said Antczak. Despite this, they led a harmonious and happy life, and the fruit of their love was a son, Mikołaj, who appeared in the world in 1964.

Although Barańska made her screen debut as early as 1958, she gained real popularity by playing the role of Barbara Niechcic, first in the film, and later in the series “Nights and Days”. It was her husband who decided to cast her in the role, which turned out to be a great success and a chance for a huge career. she began to receive many professional offers, both in television, film and theater. Unfortunately, she didn’t use any. When Antczak announced that he was planning to go to the United States, Barańska decided to end her career and focus on her family. “I felt I had a debt to pay to my loved ones. Before, they did everything to keep me from leaving the stage. I was away from home for two years because I was filming a series. Suddenly I realized that it’s not playing that is the most important thing, but my growing up son, my mother, my husband, she said.

Today, Jadwiga Barańska is 88 years old and has been living overseas for 45 years. Initially, she worked in commerce, later she took up screenwriting. She wrote the screenplay for two films directed by Antczak, which were made during their stay in exile, “Lady of Camellias” and “Chopin. Desire for Love”. Barańska regularly visits Poland and admits that although she has been living in the USA for years, her homeland is her real home.
