Somnologist Tatyana Surnenkova said that sudden nocturnal awakenings are due to hormonal disorders, mental problems, and high blood sugar. In an interview with Life, she pointed out that if a person began to wake up in the early morning hours, this could be a sign of depression.
Also, Surnenkova added, a sudden interruption of sleep at night or too early in the morning can indicate hormonal disorders and unstable blood sugar levels, which can rise sharply at night (for example, due to existing diabetes). Sleep apnea is another possible reason why a person wakes up unexpectedly during the night. The doctor explained that in the case of apnea, breathing stops occur, to which the brain reacts: not receiving the oxygen it needs with breathing, it activates the release of substances that create the effect of an “alarm signal” that forces a person to wake up.
Other problems that may be hidden behind nighttime awakenings include: indigestion accompanied by acid reflux; abuse of alcohol and caffeine; exposure to electromagnetic radiation from gadgets; sleep disorders, insomnia.
“If a person wakes up three times a week and this continues for at least three months in a row, then this is chronic insomnia and in this case it is necessary to consult a doctor,” the expert concluded.
