Provision includes vessels that use seine nets greater than 20 m3 hold capacity.
The Ministry of Production (Produce) established the limit for the fishing of bonito (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis) during 2023 for vessels that use seine nets greater than 20 m3 of hold capacity. Thus, it was determined that this year a maximum of 43,826 tons of this product will be obtained. The following distribution will be taken into account:
- 18,567 tons corresponding to the month of January until April 30.
- 4,510 tons corresponding to May 1 through June 30.
- 1,814 tons corresponding to July 1 through August 31.
- 8,426 tons corresponding to September 1 to October 31.
- 10,509 tons corresponding to November 1 through December 31.
The rule published last Thursday in the extraordinary edition of El Peruano indicates that the catch limit can be modified based on biological-fishing or environmental factors estimated by the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe), for which it will send to the Ministry of Production the recommendation with the corresponding measures.
In addition, it indicates that Produce, through a Ministerial Resolution, terminates the extractive activities of the aforementioned resource when the total quota indicated (43,826 tons) is reached or when Imarpe recommends it due to environmental or, failing that, biological circumstances. Its execution cannot be exceeded beyond December 31, 2023.
Exceptions to the rule
The legal provision also establishes that vessels that use passive fishing gear (curtain, among others), as well as purse seine vessels with a hold capacity of less than 20 m3 for the extraction of the bonito resource, are not subject to the established limit.
Those that use purse seine fishing gear must not exceed 13 tons of bonito resource per job in each transport unit.
