South Korea currently has no plans to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons, Prime Minister Han Deok-soo told CNN.
In response to a question about whether it is possible for Seoul to send lethal weapons to Kyiv, Han Duk Soo said, “Not now, I think. <…> Will we provide any support with deadly weapons? We have not yet made a decision on this matter.”
At the same time, Seoul provides Kiev with non-military assistance, including in the field of electricity, the prime minister noted, recalling that this year the South Korean authorities decided to increase support for Kyiv to $130 million.
The fact that South Korea intends to provide Ukraine with humanitarian and financial assistance in the amount of $130 million was announced on February 24 by the country’s Foreign Ministry. The assistance package includes financial support, assistance in mine clearance and infrastructure construction, in particular the restoration of the electrical network, as well as reconstruction.
According to the Yonhap agency, in 2022, South Korea provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine for a total of $100 million.
At the end of October last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that if South Korea began to supply Ukraine with weapons, it would “destroy relations” between Moscow and Seoul.
