Austria could become a mediator in resolving the conflict in Ukraine due to its neutrality, which in this case is an advantage, Czech President Milos Zeman said during a meeting with his Austrian counterpart Alexander van der Bellen.
According to Česká televize, van der Bellen, in turn, said that “Austria is militarily neutral, but neutrality is not tantamount to indifference” and the situation “does not leave the Austrian authorities indifferent.”
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin twice in the past year, in person in April and by telephone in May. He became the first European leader Putin met with after the start of the military operation. Prior to the meeting, Nehammer had said that Austria was neutral on the conflict in Ukraine; after the meeting, he stated that the dialogue did not leave “a positive overall impression”. At the same time, in December 2022, the chancellor noted that he was ready to maintain contact with Putin if this would have a positive impact on the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
