Vandals desecrated a mass grave of Soviet soldiers in Kivikko in the capital region of Finland. According to RIA Novosti with reference to the regional administration, a criminal case has been opened.
“At the end of February 2023, an act of vandalism was committed at the cemetery of Soviet soldiers in Malmi-Kivikko. A criminal case was initiated, ”the publication says.
The monument erected at the burial site was set on fire, and an insulting inscription appeared on the memorial tablet.
“Vandalism at burial sites is unacceptable. If acts of vandalism or other inappropriate actions are committed at the burial sites, the police will take care of it, ”said Anu Liljeström, a representative of the regional authorities in Eastern Finland.
The report states that after the end of the war, Finland undertook to take care of the graves of Soviet (Russian) soldiers and prisoners of war on its territory. The corresponding provision is contained in the agreement that the country concluded with the Russian Federation in 1992. On the Finnish side, the Association for the Preservation of the Memory of War Victims is responsible for the practical implementation of the agreement, and the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland is responsible for caring for the graves.
