The ex-owner of Tinkoff Bank, Oleg Tinkov, who announced in October 2022 that he was renouncing Russian citizenship, appealed to the British Foreign Office with a request to remove him from the sanctions list. It is reported by Bloomberg.

In a statement, Tinkov said that he supported sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Tinkov’s request, according to Bloomberg, was supported by ex-owner of Yukos Mikhail Khodorkovsky (included in the register of foreign agents)currently living in the UK. He also wrote a letter to the British Foreign Office calling for the lifting of sanctions against Tinkov. “I believe that the decision to impose sanctions against him was wrong,” he explained his decision, explaining that he considers it necessary to clearly link the lifting of sanctions with the public expression of his position by the banker.

At the end of April, Vladimir Potanin’s Interros announced the purchase of a 35% stake in Oleg Tinkov’s family in TCS Group (the parent company of Tinkoff Bank). This happened less than two weeks after Tinkov turned to the “collective West” with a request to contribute to the end of hostilities. Tinkov claimed that the deal was made under duress.

In recent years, Tinkov has lived in the UK, where he was part of a course of treatment for leukemia. At the end of March, London imposed personal sanctions against the businessman, which included freezing accounts, banning his ships (including leased ones) from entering British ports, and accepting his planes at British airports. Entry into the country for Tinkov, however, London did not prohibit. On March 26, the UK lifted restrictions against Tinkov’s planes and yachts, but restored them again four days later.
