Norwegian law enforcement authorities have detained Swedish activist Greta Thunberg during a protest against the construction and operation of wind farms in the territory inhabited by indigenous peoples, which takes place in Oslo. It is reported by NRK.
It is reported that Greta Thunberg was among the detained activists who blocked the buildings of several ministries in the government quarter of the Norwegian capital. Thunberg arrived in Oslo on Sunday and has repeatedly participated in protests.
Eco-activists have been protesting in the Norwegian capital since February 23. During this time, they managed to block a number of buildings, including the Ministry of Oil and Energy, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Climate and the Environment. Amid protests, Norwegian Oil and Energy Minister Terje Åsland on Wednesday canceled a planned visit to the UK.
In 2021, the Supreme Court of the Kingdom ruled that, according to international conventions, the operation of two wind farms built in central Norway in the province of Trønnelag violates the rights of the Saami living in this territory. However, 16 months after the verdict, the work of the stations continues. Local reindeer herders are demanding the removal of the turbines, claiming that their noise and appearance frighten the animals and “violate centuries of tradition.”
The Norwegian government emphasizes that the issue of building and operating power plants is a complex legal and political dilemma. The authorities expect to find a compromise, despite the decision of the Supreme Court.
