The duty forces of the Western zone of responsibility for air defense conducted a training session on interaction with civilian air traffic control authorities. According to RBC, this was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
During the training, they worked out the detection, interception and identification of the alleged intruder target. Fighters were involved in the maneuvers.
“In the practical part of the training, fighters from the duty air defense forces of the Western Military District were involved, which made sorties to work out the issues of intercepting and identifying the conditional target of the intruder,” the message says.
In turn, the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, said that the head of state has full information about the closing of the sky over St. Petersburg, but it would be “wrong” for the Kremlin to talk about it. “Let’s focus on statements from the aviation authorities and the military,” Peskov suggested.
Earlier it was reported that the Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg temporarily suspended flights. The media speculated that the airport was closed due to an unidentified flying object.
The “Carpet” plan was introduced, which means the requirement for the immediate landing or withdrawal from the area of all airborne aircraft, with the exception of military and rescue aircraft.
Smolny said that flights were delayed until 12:00 Moscow time. At the same time, until 13:20 Moscow time, it was announced that the airspace was closed at all altitudes within a radius of 200 km around Pulkovo. The restrictions were lifted at 11:40 Moscow time.
