Passenger air transportation between Russia and China may be reduced by 60-70% compared to pre-pandemic levels, RBC reports citing a letter from Deputy Transport Minister Valentin Ivanov to Opora Rossii President Alexander Kalinin, sent on February 16.
As noted in the document, in 2019, Russian companies transported almost 3 million people on flights between China and Russia. According to this indicator, China was in the top 10 most popular countries for Russian airlines. At the same time, in 2023, according to the forecast, passenger traffic on this route may decrease to 0.9-1.2 million people.
The reduction in traffic between the countries is caused by the lack of guarantees from Beijing that it will not delay aircraft at the request of third countries in connection with Western sanctions, as well as a ban on dual-registration aircraft flying to China (simultaneously in Russia, Bermuda or Ireland). ), Ivanov explained.
At the same time, as Gleb Kinder, vice-president of Opora Rossii, told the agency, if air traffic is available, including from the regions of Russia, the passenger flow between the countries could reach 5 million people. Currently, flights to China are carried out mainly from Moscow and several cities of the Far East and Siberia.
