The EU needs to “avoid getting too emotional” when seeking a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, Fu Cong, Chinese ambassador to the EU, told Global Times.

According to the diplomat, the situation in Ukraine should not affect relations between China and the EU, but European countries are experiencing “inappropriate emotions” towards Beijing because of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. At the same time, the Chinese side cannot agree with some of Europe’s positions on this issue.

“People may have desires, but they must face the truth. Otherwise, the conflict will drag on,” Fu Cong said. At the same time, he stressed that China is disposed towards a “more just and reasonable position” and will not take sides in the conflict in Ukraine, but will “help achieve peace.”

The ambassador also said that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel may visit China in the first half of this year. According to him, preparations for their visit are already underway.

Recall that earlier the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement with Beijing’s position on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. The document consists of 12 points, among which is the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and the resumption of direct dialogue between Moscow and Kiev. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he considers China’s proposals for a settlement “not a plan of action, but Beijing’s reflections on this topic.” In turn, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, also said that he did not consider China’s proposals on Ukraine to be a peace plan. In his opinion, it is rather a positional document.
