The Russian authorities made a “big mistake” by deciding to suspend Moscow’s participation in a joint strategic arms reduction treaty with Washington. This was reported by the Associated Press, said US President Joe Biden.
The agency notes that this is Biden’s first comment in connection with the decision of the Russian Federation on the nuclear missile treaty. The day before, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called the suspension of Russia’s participation in the treaty “irresponsible.” At the same time, he stressed that the American side is ready to discuss with Moscow the issue of arms limitation at any time.
Recall that the day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in START-3. Today, the relevant bill was approved by the State Duma and the Federation Council.
According to the Russian leader, the United States and NATO require Russia to comply with the terms of the agreement, but at the same time seek to inflict a “strategic defeat” on it. Also, he added, Washington rejects Moscow’s applications for inspections of American facilities provided for by the agreement.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the Russian Federation will continue to comply with the restrictions stipulated by the treaty and exchange notifications with the United States about the launch of ballistic missiles.
