Poland is ready to completely close the border with Belarus if there is a security threat. According to RBC with reference to the WPN portal, this was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of the country Pavel Yablonsky.
“If there are such needs, especially motivated by security, we will certainly be ready for this,” Yablonsky said in response to a question whether Poland would completely close the border with Belarus.
At the same time, he noted that the adoption of this decision will not be based solely on political factors. The Polish authorities understand that there are companies that can transport goods that are not subject to the embargo across the border, Yablonsky explained.
“If our analysis shows that there is a growing threat to security, then such decisions can be made,” the deputy head of the Polish Foreign Ministry added.
In April 2022, the EU, as part of the fifth package of sanctions, banned the passage of vehicles from Russia and Belarus. The ban applies to road freight transport within the EU, including transit. Transit to the Kaliningrad region has been preserved. The exceptions were pharmaceutical, medical, agricultural and food products, including wheat, as well as humanitarian shipments.
On the eve of February 20, Poland decided to restrict the movement of trucks at the last working checkpoint with Belarus – “Kukuryki – Kozlovichi”. The exception will be trucks registered in the EU member states, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
