One of the largest flares in recent years has occurred in the sun. In the next two or three days, geomagnetic consequences should be expected on Earth – in particular, moderate magnetic storms, RBC reports citing Sergey Bogachev, chief researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to the expert, “this is not a record event in history, there were events 10-15 times larger, but offhand, this is the largest outbreak in several years.” At the same time, Bogachev noted that the outbreak was unexpected, despite the previous “some increase in activity” of the sun. Scientists suggest that a repeat event may occur within a week.

Bogachev added that despite the power of the outbreak, there will not be particularly strong consequences on Earth, since it will be affected “only in a limited area.”

At the same time, the Russian Academy of Sciences notes that over the past month and a half of this year, five outbreaks of the highest class have already been recorded, while there were only seven such events for the entire last year. “The increase in solar activity is about 20-30% higher than predicted, which may mean either an earlier peak in activity, possibly at the end of this year, or a significantly higher maximum than previously predicted,” the experts concluded.
