Scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago have found ways to get rid of non-alcoholic fat accumulated in the liver without drugs. As the results of studies have shown, these methods may well normalize the work of one of the main human organs, the kubnews.ru portal writes.
Experts note that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is directly related to the development of type 2 diabetes, cirrhosis, and kidney failure. If the accumulated fat is not disposed of in time, the condition of the liver can deteriorate, which will lead to disastrous consequences. However, drugs can also affect the liver negatively, so scientists have been looking for ways to do without them.
As part of the study, scientists used in the experiment 80 people with non-alcoholic liver fat. They were divided into groups, and for three months people from one group alternated days without dietary restrictions and fasting days, in which they consumed no more than 500 kilocalories (about a third of the average norm). The second group used the elliptical trainer five times a week, the third group combined fasting days and exercises.
As a result of the study, absolutely all participants had increased insulin sensitivity, decreased liver fat, and levels of ALT and AST enzymes – markers of liver disease. However, the best results were shown by participants from the third group, who combined fasting days and exercises.
