The Swiss Ministry of Justice declared illegal the possibility of confiscating Russian private assets held in Swiss banks and sending them to the restoration of Ukraine. It is reported by Interfax.
“A working group led by the Ministry of Justice concluded that the confiscation of Russian private assets is contrary to the federal constitution and the existing legal order,” reads a communiqué published on the website of the Swiss Federal Council.
At the same time, the document emphasizes that regardless of the discussions on this topic, Switzerland will continue to support Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the permanent representatives of the EU countries earlier on Wednesday approved the formation of a working group to use the blocked assets of the Russian Federation in the interests of restoring Ukraine. The purpose of the working group will be to determine how the frozen assets of the Russian Federation are used in accordance with EU law.
Earlier, a high-ranking European official told reporters that EU leaders, as part of the discussion on assistance to Ukraine, planned to move forward on the use of frozen Russian assets. But this, he explained, is not about their confiscation. “This is a sanctions regime, not a confiscation regime. The sanctions regime means you can use the money, but you have to pay it back when the policy changes,” the EU official said.
