Meta and other platforms unite in defense of minors on the internet

The signatories called on online service providers and companies in the sector to be more transparent and accountable.

Paris (EFE).- Meta, Amazon y Twitter, among other major platforms, supported on Thursday a commitment in favor of the protection of minors on the internet, for which they advocated a “zero tolerance” against violence against them on the networks.

In this initiative, launched within the framework of the Paris Forum for Peace, inaugurated on Thursday, they emphasize their willingness to fight against the exploitation and sexual violence that affect minors on the internet, to help the victims and to facilitate the prosecution of those responsible.

They also pledged to fight against all forms of economic exploitation and to be particularly vigilant against new forms of forced child labor in a digital environment.

Among the signatories are also DailyMotion, Google, Microsoft, Qwant, Snap y YouTube, as well as France, Unicef, Argentina, Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco and the NGO Save the Children.

In their statement they bet on create tools adapted to minors to educate them better in the challenges that the internet may present, which, while offering them the opportunity to exercise their right to education or freedom of expression, can also expose them to “harmful and violent content”.

The signatories called on online service providers and companies in the sector to “Respect rigorous standards in matters of transparency and responsibility” and invited other governments or stakeholders to join.

French President Emmanuel Macron considered that this type of initiative is presented as an imperative “to protect minors when they resort to tools that have not necessarily been created for them.”
