The Japanese government intends to conclude a major contract with the United States for the purchase of Tomahawk cruise missiles. According to the Kyodo agency, this was announced by Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada.

Hamada did not specify the exact number of missiles that the Japanese side intends to acquire. According to the agency, it is planned to purchase about 500 Tomahawk missiles in fiscal year 2023, which will begin on April 1.

On December 16, 2022, the Japanese government approved a new national security strategy, which is the fundamental document of defense policy. In particular, it spells out the right to launch counterattacks on targets on the territory of a potential enemy. But pre-emptive strikes against the territory of the alleged enemy are not allowed.

The strategy stipulates an almost double increase in defense spending by 2027, to 2% of GDP (following the NATO model). As part of the development of counterattack capabilities, Japan plans to increase the range of its Type 12 missiles and purchase American Tomahawk cruise missiles.
