It will promote the eco-design of products, the consumption and responsible management of waste at the end of their useful life.
The main objective of the first Circular Economy Center (CEC) of Latin America, founded in Ecuador by the company Sambito, is to mitigate the impact of human activities on the environment, and in this way to be able to mark in the country and the region a transition towards the so-called circular economy.
The CEC also seeks to generate a sustainable management mechanism in each of the companies.
The circular economy involves decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and eliminating waste from the system from design. The circular model creates economic, natural and social capital and is based on three principles:
- Eliminate waste and contamination from the design
- Keep products and materials in use
- Regenerate natural systems
In this way, companies that apply this sustainable model will be able to generate more social, economic and environmental value. Likewise, through the implementation of sustainable practices, It will promote the eco-design of products, the consumption and responsible management of waste at the end of their useful life.
“The circular economy is about understanding that, from this great winery that we extract all the resources to be able to live as we like, it is reaching its limit. We live in an unsustainable model, there are more and more people on the planet who demand more resources that are not produced at the speed we demand, it is for this reason that this circular economy model benefits human beings both economically and socially ”, said José Javier Guarderas, general manager of Sambito.
With eco-friendly school supplies and training for recyclers, the aim is to promote the circular economy in Ecuador
The CEC will work with all sectors of the country, private companies, academia, the public sector, NGOs and civil society. It will offer personalized mentoring that helps implement the methodology of successful circular economy models. This mentoring is based on several points:
- Diagnosis of circularity
- Problem identification
- Study of cases
- Implementation of the project prototype based on the product
- Determination and articulation of actions with all sectors
- Trial and error stage to prove that the project works
- Execution of the proposal
“The CEC initiative will allow us to carry out research projects and link with our students and teachers, to be able to add to this management that Sambito has been carrying out for a long time. And that will be strengthened with the participation of new institutions and the support of the government, and the municipality of Samborondón ”, indicated Gilda Alcívar García, rector of the Ecotec University.
