Turkish law enforcement agencies have arrested at least 98 people on suspicion of looting earthquake-damaged buildings and telephone fraud, Anadolu reports citing security sources.

40 people were detained on suspicion of looting buildings in southern Turkey’s Hatay province, the sources said. The suspects were seized $11,000, 70,000 Turkish liras ($3,700), 20 mobile phones, eight laptops, five household appliances, six pistols and three rifles, as well as jewelry and bank cards, the security service said.

Two more arrested, posing as humanitarian workers, tried to steal six trucks of food for victims in Khatai. In addition, the authorities arrested several people who called the victims after the earthquake and found out their bank details, ostensibly to provide assistance.

In total, arrests took place in eight Turkish provinces – Kahramanmarash, Hatay, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmania, Adana, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa, writes Anadolu.

Recall, on February 6, two devastating earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 were recorded in the Pazardzhik region in Kahramanmarash and a magnitude of 7.6 in the Elbistan region.
