The German Armed Forces will begin training Ukrainian troops to operate Leopard 2 tanks in the middle of next week, Der Spiegel writes, citing its sources.
According to the publication, over the past few days, the first groups of Ukrainian military personnel with military equipment have been transferred from Poland to Germany. In the middle of next week, Leopard 2 training will start at the Munster military training ground in Lower Saxony. Previously, Ukrainian units trained on the Marder-type infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) at this training ground.
As the newspaper notes, the Bundeswehr plans to quickly train soldiers who arrived from the line of contact near the city of Bakhmut (Russian name – Artemovsk). It is expected that in six to eight weeks they will master the basics of operating weapons, as well as work out the interaction of tanks and the Marder. At the same time, the publication emphasizes that usually the training of teams takes several years.
If the rapid training plan is successfully implemented, the first Ukrainian military will go to the combat zone on Leopard 2 at the end of March, the newspaper specifies.
Since the beginning of the military operation, about 1,500 Ukrainian servicemen have been trained in the management of various combat systems (such as Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers) in Germany.
