The authorities plan to equip vehicle checkpoints at Russian borders with a new facial recognition system. According to RBC, the corresponding application was posted on the public procurement portal in early February.

The FGKU “Directorate for the construction and operation of facilities of the Russian border” acted as the customer, it is ready to allocate 830 million rubles for the work. The equipment delivery time is until November 25, 2023.

According to the documents, the systems are planned to be installed in Primorye and the Trans-Baikal Territory at three border checkpoints with China (Zabaikalsk, Pogranichny and Kraskino); in the Kaliningrad region on the borders with Lithuania and Poland (Bagrationovsk, Mamonovo, Chernyshevskoye); in the Orenburg region on the Russian-Kazakh border (“Mashtakovo”, “Orsk” and “Sagarchin”). It is also expected that the system will be installed at the Adler checkpoint in the Krasnodar Territory on the border with Abkhazia.

The terms of reference say that the system should compare the driver’s face in the image with all the data stored in some “biometric database or in a certain list.”
