Hiccups that occur in humans are usually harmless, but persistent hiccups can be a sign of serious health problems. The Sun writes about it.
As experts clarify, hiccups lasting more than two days are considered permanent, and a number of disorders can cause it.
Digestive disorders. Hiccups can indicate disorders in the digestive system. In particular, it is provoked by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia or peptic ulcers. Diseases of the esophagus can also be the cause of the problem – some persistent “cotics” are diagnosed with esophagitis or cancer of the esophagus.
Cardiovascular and pulmonary. Incessant hiccups can be associated with serious heart problems such as pericarditis, aortic aneurysm, myocardial infarction. Pneumonia, lung cancer, or pulmonary embolism can also cause long-term, uncontrollable hiccups.
Problems with the liver and kidneys. In rare cases, persistent hiccups become a sign of liver and kidney cancer. Hepatitis or liver abscess, uremia, and kidney failure can also cause persistent hiccups.
Problems with the brain and nervous system. Strokes, brain tumors or traumatic brain injuries add to the list of serious pathological causes of this condition. In addition, continuous hiccups are observed in diseases affecting the nervous system. These include meningitis, convulsive syndromes, multiple sclerosis.
Experts strongly recommend that if persistent hiccups occur, see a doctor.
