The parochialization of this area was carried out in 1958. Its population has promoted the request to be a canton in previous governments. The current territory of Seville Don Bosco amounts to almost 50% of the Morona canton. In addition, 17,000 people live in this sector, the vast majority Shuar indigenous people, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses.
Seville Don Bosco met the requirements established in the Ecuadorian regulations to be a canton. The law indicates that the parish must have a minimum of 50,000 inhabitants, but in the case of the Amazon that figure drops to 10,000. In addition, it must be at least ten years old and have a legally recognized territorial delimitation.
The limited coverage of drinking water, the high levels of poverty, especially in the Shuar communities in the area, and the lack of educational infrastructure were the main reasons why the Sevillians have requested a popular consultation to determine their cantonization.
